Maddison Hurt Again as Tottenham End Their Stamford Bridge Hoodoo With a 2-0 Win at Chelsea
James Maddison sat on the Stamford Bridge turf with his teammates gathered round him, holding back tears. Fifty minutes into his first start in 18 months, his body had said no again.
And then something strange happened. Tottenham won anyway β and not just won. Spurs beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, only their second Premier League victory at the ground in 35 attempts, and their first clean-sheet win there since December 1986.
How Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-0
The breakthrough came in the 77th minute, and it was cruel on Chelsea's young goalkeeper. A Mateus Fernandes corner swung in without much menace, and Mike Penders, making his debut, punched it backwards into his own net. Mathys Tel settled it late with a precise finish. Between the two goals, Cole Palmer β who had already been lucky to escape an early red card β picked up a second yellow for a stamp on Conor Gallagher and walked.
Spurs had not come to spoil. Fernandes ran the middle of the park and was named man of the match, and Roberto De Zerbi's side looked, for once this season, like a team that believed it belonged in this fixture.
Maddison's 50 minutes: tears, hugs, and a groin worry
The story of the night, though, was the man who left it early. Maddison pulled up with nobody near him, squatting on the pitch during a break in play around the 49th minute as teammates rushed over and medical staff followed. He walked off slowly, head down, straight down the tunnel β hugged on the way by Chelsea players and even by Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso. Gallagher, a former Chelsea man himself, came on to a mixed reception.
What stung was the timing. On Monday, Maddison had marked his first competitive start in 536 days by curling home against Coventry, the club where it all began, in a 3-1 win. He had spoken to Sky Sports about the "dark days" of recovering from an ACL injury, about dreaming of moments like that goal while he rehabbed. On Friday, De Zerbi admitted he did not know whether Maddison was ready for Chelsea at all β the midfielder had not trained with the group in the first three days of the week.

The early word from the Sky Sports broadcast was a groin injury, not the knee β a small mercy, if it holds. De Zerbi, who had called Maddison a player to be managed "like a diamond", sounded both shaken and hopeful afterwards. "Not very important problem I hope," he said. "We need to make the medical check tomorrow." He added, in a line that will stick with Spurs fans: "Who loves football loves James Maddison."
Maddison did make it back out before the end, emerging from the dressing room to join the celebrations on the bench. The cameras caught him there, smiling at last, as Tottenham closed out a win most of their fans had stopped expecting at this ground.
What the result means
Chelsea stay fourth with 13 points, but this was a night that dented their momentum and cost them Palmer's discipline. Spurs climb to 12th with nine points β hardly a parade, but a first away win at Chelsea in eight years is the kind of result that can change a dressing room's mood.
Chelsea go to Liverpool in the League Cup on Wednesday, then host Manchester United on Halloween. Spurs are off until Halloween, when Crystal Palace come to north London. The question hanging over both fixtures is the same one De Zerbi faces on Sunday morning: what does the medical check say?
For Maddison, the wait is the worst part. He has done the hardest yards already β the surgery, the setbacks, the 536 days. Now he waits on a scan, again, hoping this one is a footnote and not another chapter.
