Storm Boelo: Amber 'Danger to Life' Warning as 80mph Gusts Hammer Scotland Tonight
If you live anywhere north of the border, tonight is not the night to travel. After Friday's Storm Austen battered the south with 84mph gusts, the Met Office has now upgraded its alert for Storm Boelo β the second named storm of the season β to a full amber warning. From 9pm tonight until 9pm tomorrow, Scotland is about to take the hit.
I know storm fatigue is real. Austen only just moved on. But Boelo looks like the nastier of the two, and the warnings are blunt: flying debris, power cuts, a danger to life. Here's everything you need to know.
Storm Boelo amber warning: where and when
The amber wind warning covers much of Scotland β all of the mainland, the Western Isles, Northumberland, Cumbria, and parts of Northern Ireland β from 9pm on Saturday 24 October to 9pm on Sunday 25 October. Within the amber zone there is a 50 to 75 per cent chance of significant impact, including disruption to road and rail travel.
Sitting outside that core is a wider yellow warning for wind stretching into England and covering the whole of Northern Ireland. Met Office Chief Forecaster Dan Suri put it plainly: "Storm Austen is moving into the Low Countries today but will still bring wet and windy conditions to large parts of the UK through the day... Conditions will eventually improve briefly tonight before Storm Boelo moves in from the west."
Storm Boelo wind speeds: how bad will it get?
Very strong westerly winds, with widespread gusts of 60 to 70mph and up to 80mph in exposed coastal areas. The strongest winds hit western Scotland and the far north of Northern Ireland on Saturday evening, then spread eastwards overnight and through Sunday, accompanied by periods of heavy rain and frequent showers.
The headline risks: injuries and danger to life from flying debris, damage to buildings and trees, power cuts, road and bridge closures, and cancellations across rail, air and ferry services. On the coasts, large waves could throw beach material onto sea fronts and roads β Glasgow Times coverage warns of "danger to life from large waves" along exposed coasts.

Context matters here. Austen's amber warning only just expired, and the first storm left its mark: gusts of 76mph at St Mary's on the Isles of Scilly, 74mph in Aberporth and 71mph in Culdrose on Friday. Some 18,000 homes across Wales and the South West lost power; 138 schools in England and the Channel Islands closed or opened late; ferry crossings from Dover and Newhaven were cancelled.
And then there's Brighton. Footage emerged on Friday of a huge section of the historic West Pier collapsing into the sea as waves smashed it β the pier opened in 1866 and has been battered for decades, but Austen took another chunk of it. It is a vivid reminder of what these storms do.
Police Scotland's road policing chief, Superintendent Andy Barclay, advised drivers to plan ahead and "consider if your journey is really necessary or if it can be delayed until conditions improve," warning that stopping distances can at least double on wet roads and spray will cut visibility.
Storm Boelo: cancelled events, travel and half-term chaos
The timing is brutal β half-term weekend. Around 750 youth football games across parts of Scotland have been disrupted or cancelled. Callendar Park's Pumpkin Adventures in Falkirk, the Hopetoun House family events, Arnprior Pumpkins and several RSPB reserves have shut or cancelled for the weekend. If you have anything booked, contact the organiser before setting out.
Transport Scotland's Resilience Room and multi-agency response teams are monitoring conditions through the warning period, and SSEN β the network operator in the north β is braced for outages. If you lose power, call 105.
The winds ease from the west during Sunday, but the Met Office urges everyone in the amber zone to stay inside where possible during the worst of it, secure anything loose β bins, garden furniture, trampolines β and keep torches and phone power packs to hand. And it comes as the Prime Minister warns Britain faces "a winter of greater flooding" β this may not be the last one.
