It was the night the Champions League turned upside down. On Tuesday, in the second round of matches in this season's league stage, little Club Brugge walked into the San Siro and beat Inter Milan 4-3, while Norwegian minnows Viking Stavanger snatched a 3-3 draw with Bayern Munich thanks to a goal in added time. Add in another defeat for Manchester United, and it was one of the wildest nights European football has produced in years.

The shocks were the story. But they were not the only story: Arsenal cruised past Lille, Barcelona came from behind to thrash Galatasaray, and Atletico Madrid piled more misery on United. Here is how a chaotic Tuesday night unfolded.

Club Brugge 4-3 Inter: Tresoldi's treble stuns the San Siro

The headline act belonged to Nicolo Tresoldi. The young German striker scored a hat-trick as Club Brugge beat Inter 4-3 at the San Siro, one of the great cathedrals of European football.

Tresoldi opened the scoring from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark after Hakan Calhanoglu fouled Carlos Forbs. Lautaro Martinez equalised for Inter before half-time, but Brugge struck again early in the second half: a misunderstanding between Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez and his defence let Forbs knock the ball through the keeper's legs, leaving Tresoldi to tap into an empty net.

Tresoldi completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute, and although Martinez scored a second for Inter seven minutes later, Romeo Vermant made it 4-2 in the 87th minute. Ange-Yoan Bonny's reply deep into added time was scant consolation for the home fans. It was a famous win for the Belgian side β€” and a result that will echo around the competition.

Viking 3-3 Bayern: Haugen's late equaliser caps a Norwegian fairytale

If Brugge's win was a shock, what happened in Stavanger was barely believable. Viking raced into a 2-0 lead against Bayern Munich, one of the favourites to win the whole competition. Bayern, showing all their champion quality, fought back to lead β€” only for Michael Olise's dismissal to leave them exposed in the closing minutes.

Then came the moment of the night in Norway. With the clock deep into added time, Herman Johan Haugen struck to earn Viking a point that will live forever in the club's history. The draw was a fairytale for the Norwegian side and a serious warning to every big club in the competition: nobody can take anything for granted in this format.

Manchester United lose again as Arsenal cruise

For English fans, the night brought a familiar mix of joy and misery. Arsenal were superb, scoring three times in seven minutes to beat Lille 3-0 at home. It was the kind of ruthless, confident performance that marks a team with serious ambitions in this competition.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are still searching for answers. Atletico Madrid beat them 2-0 in Spain, with Leny Yoro sent off, piling more misery on Michael Carrick's out-of-form side. United's European campaign is now under real pressure, and the inquest into another flat performance will be loud.

Barcelona rally, Lens beaten β€” and what comes next

Barcelona proved the most convincing of the giants, recovering from a first-half deficit in Istanbul to beat Galatasaray 4-1, with Lamine Yamal supplying two assists. In the early kick-offs, Lens were beaten 2-0 at home by Sporting CP, while Villarreal and RB Leipzig also won on home turf against Napoli and PSV respectively.

The results shake up the league-stage table early in the campaign, with the underdogs suddenly holding cards nobody expected them to hold. Wednesday brings another full slate of fixtures, headlined by Manchester City against Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool's trip to LASK. If Tuesday taught us anything, it is that no result can be taken for granted β€” not even at home, not even against the smallest club in the draw.
