Martinez's Bombshell: Man Utd Defender Slams Club Hierarchy After Atletico Defeat as Rooney and Carragher Hit Back
Lisandro Martinez launched an astonishing post-match attack on Manchester United's hierarchy after Tuesday night's 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, accusing the club's leadership of failing to back Michael Carrick in the transfer market. The outburst drew fierce rebukes from Wayne Rooney and Jamie Carragher within hours β and lit up social media, with Manchester United, Martinez and Carrick all trending worldwide on X.
47 seconds of chaos: how the night unravelled in Madrid
United could hardly have started worse at the Metropolitano. One ball in behind from Lee Kang-in cut the visitors wide open: Diogo Dalot was left yards behind Alex Baena, who had acres of space to run into before squaring for Pablo Barrios, whose side-footed shot crept under Ayden Heaven. Forty-seven seconds was all it took.
There were flashes of response β Bryan Mbeumo twice forced Jan Oblak into saves, Marcus Rashford showed moments of promise and Bruno Fernandes struck the crossbar β but the evening turned decisively against United when Leny Yoro brought down Jonathan David as he powered towards goal. After a VAR review at the pitchside monitor, Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg produced a red card that looked harsh, and with a one-man advantage Atletico struck again: Alejandro Grimaldo fed David, Senne Lammens could only parry, and Ademola Lookman tapped in.
The defeat extended United's winless run to five games and left them with only two wins in nine matches in all competitions, piling pressure on head coach Michael Carrick β all of it unfolding in front of watching co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Martinez's extraordinary broadside: 'what about other areas?'
It was what happened after the final whistle that will dominate the headlines. Speaking to Amazon Prime, Martinez β who is out of contract at the end of the season β said he had expected far more from "upstairs", singling out technical director Jason Wilcox, after a summer window in which United spent Β£155m on just four major signings but failed to strengthen at left-back and up front.
"I have to control myself a lot, but sometimes it's a reflection of how our club is at the moment," the Argentina defender said. "We had a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top, from upstairs, to bring in more players to compete because many teams have brought in many players as well."

On Carrick, he was sympathetic but pointed: "He does his best. But every season is different. You can't stay with what you did last season." Then, asked about the constant managerial turnover at the club, Martinez looked upwards, shrugged and said: "You start changing, changing, changing managers. But what about other areas?" Pointing up and nodding, he added: "Because also tonight it is easy to say the coach, it is easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas."
Carragher: 'awful' β Rooney: 'disrespectful'
The reaction was swift and brutal. Speaking on CBS Sports, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher branded Martinez's comments "awful", arguing the defender should look at himself after a "really poor" start to the season. "It doesn't do anybody any good at all," Carragher said, adding that while United supporters would lap up an attack on the hierarchy, the timing was terrible. He also dismissed Martinez's claim of a "fantastic" last season, noting a manager was sacked and third place owed much to an early cup exit and rivals' poor form.
Former United captain Wayne Rooney, also speaking on Amazon Prime, said Martinez had "gone a bit too far" and called the interview disrespectful to his team-mates, since it implied the squad is not good enough. "His performances haven't been good enough," Rooney said, adding that if anyone had the standing to raise concerns, it was captain Bruno Fernandes β "and even then it should be behind closed doors". Rooney warned the outburst would "bring a greater noise" around the club and leave players unsettled and distrustful.
Pressure mounts on Carrick β and what comes next
Carrick, who fielded an experimental side with Carlos Baleba making his debut and a new-look defence, now faces a defining stretch. The winless run, the public civil war between a senior player and the board, and a trip to Elland Road on Sunday leave United's season at a tipping point. Whether the hierarchy responds publicly to Martinez's broadside β and what consequences follow for a player in the final year of his contract β will shape the story in the coming days.
