RAF Fairford Terror Plot: Seventh Arrest Made as US Pulls B-1 Bombers From UK Base
The investigation into the suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford has entered a new phase. On October 6, counter-terrorism police arrested a 22-year-old British man in Westminster, central London β the seventh arrest in a case that began with five men and three suspicious vans near the Gloucestershire airbase on September 27, and has since become one of the most politically charged security stories of the year.
The latest suspect was arrested on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Counter Terrorism Policing said officers searched a property in the Westminster area, and the man was later released on bail under strict conditions β the same outcome as the previous six arrests.
The timeline so far
The case began when police received a report of suspicious vehicles travelling toward RAF Fairford, a Royal Air Force station that hosts US Air Force bombers. Five British men in their 20s were arrested near the base on September 27 after police stopped three vans. Officers found a quantity of petrol in the vehicles but no explosives. Four days later, a sixth suspect β a 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national β was detained in Westminster. The seventh arrest followed on October 6. All seven men are now on bail, a fact that has drawn public criticism from US President Donald Trump, who said he was "surprised" by the releases.
Why RAF Fairford matters
Fairford is the only base on Britain's mainland used by US bombers in the ongoing war against Iran, which began at the end of February. The base's proximity to Iran β far shorter than flying from the United States β has made it strategically vital for American operations, and the US confirmed on October 4 that it had withdrawn all of its bombers from the base. According to Reuters, US officials linked the redeployment to a suspected Iranian plot to carry out a complex drone attack on the facility.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said there are "strong indications" that Iran played a part in the incident β a claim Tehran flatly denies. The suspected plot follows a series of arson attacks at Jewish sites in London earlier in the year that were linked to an Iran-backed group, and it has intensified the diplomatic confrontation between Britain and Iran. The US move has also raised awkward questions in Westminster: Downing Street has insisted RAF Fairford is safe, even as American bombers flew home over stated security concerns.
A live investigation with high stakes
"This remains a live investigation and our specialist teams continue to pursue multiple lines of enquiry," Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, said in a statement. Police are still working to identify the motivation behind the events in Gloucestershire, and have said they are committed to investigating all possible angles.
The case sits at the intersection of Britain's most sensitive fault lines: the Iran war, the safety of US military assets on British soil, and the limits of what counter-terrorism policing can publicly reveal. For now, seven men are on bail, the bombers are gone, and the questions are multiplying.
