Inside NATO Waters This Time: Two Tankers Ablaze Off Romania, Eight Sailors Missing
The fires started in the dark. Sometime between late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, two chemical tankers anchored off Romania's Black Sea coast caught fire β and by sunrise, eight sailors were unaccounted for. A rescue vessel and a helicopter were searching the water as Bucharest scrambled to understand what had happened.
The ship at the centre of the search is the Wine Trader, a chemical tanker sailing under the flag of San Marino. Romania's naval authority said it received an emergency alert at around 7am on Thursday. The vessel was sitting roughly 13 nautical miles south-east of Sulina β the Romanian port where the Danube's Sulina Canal empties into the Black Sea. Twelve people were on board. Four are safe. Eight are missing.
Hours earlier, a second tanker had caught fire in the same stretch of water: the Yara J, flagged to the Comoros Islands, a chemical and oil carrier. That crew had the better luck β they managed to douse the flames themselves, and everyone aboard is safe, Romanian authorities said.
Here is the detail that has NATO capitals paying attention: Russian drones strayed into Romanian airspace overnight, Romanian officials confirmed on Thursday. Officials stopped short of explicitly linking the fires to the drones. But the timing is hard to wave away.
This is not the first time this month. On Tuesday, drones struck two commercial ships off Bulgaria's coast β one sank, eleven sailors went missing, and Bulgaria called the attacks "absolutely unacceptable" while seeking NATO and EU help. Now it has happened again, one coast up. The difference: the latest incidents took place inside a NATO member's own territorial waters. The previous strikes did not.

π Donate via PayPalRomania's defence minister, Radu Miruta, told the Digi24 television channel that an investigation was underway into whether the Yara J had been struck by a drone. "This is a matter of significant gravity, given that such incidents are occurring in Romanian territorial waters," he said.
The stakes go beyond two burning tankers. Both ships were anchored near the mouth of the Sulina Canal β the main channel through which Ukraine's grain exports flow out of the Danube, a route that became critical after Russia started hammering Ukraine's own Black Sea ports. The Sulina roadstead is chronically congested: ships anchor and wait, sometimes for days, to pass through the canal.
Turkey's IMEAK chamber of shipping counts at least 163 civilian and commercial vessels hit on the Black Sea in the first eight months of this year alone. In the past ten days, suspected Russian drones have hit at least five cargo ships near the Romanian and Bulgarian coasts, with at least 23 sailors lost. Those attacks took place just outside NATO's territorial waters. Thursday's fires cross that line.
Romania shares a 614-kilometre border with Ukraine, most of it along the Danube, and has reported repeated breaches of its airspace by Russian drones over the past four years. Bucharest has treated each incident so far as spillover from the Ukraine war. The question Miruta's investigation has to answer is whether "spillover" still describes it.
What happens next matters for grain markets and for NATO's eastern flank in equal measure. An attack inside Romanian territorial waters would test the alliance's nerves; a string of unexplained fires would test something else β whether shipping in the Black Sea can function at all. Eight families, meanwhile, are waiting for a helicopter crew to find what it is looking for.
