Waterford House Fire Kills Four — Two Adults and Two Children Dead, Two Children Critical as Gardaí Open Criminal Investigation
Four people — a man, a woman and two children — have died after a house fire in Waterford city in the early hours of Tuesday morning, and two other children are being treated in hospital for critical injuries. Gardaí have opened a criminal investigation into the blaze, with arson reported as a primary line of inquiry.
What happened in Birchwood
Emergency services were alerted to a fire at a house on Birchwood Avenue in the Birchwood estate, Kilcohan, in Waterford city shortly after 5am on Tuesday, October 13. Gardaí said they were alerted at 5.13am.
“A number of units from surrounding stations attended and on arrival found a well-developed fire. Firefighting operations commenced immediately, and a number of casualties were removed from the two-storey house. The fire was extinguished and the scene handed over to An Garda Síochána,” the statement said.
Gardaí later confirmed that two adults — one man and one woman — and two children had died. Two other children were removed from the scene and taken to hospital, where they are being treated for critical injuries. The identities of the dead have not yet been released.
Criminal investigation under way
An incident room has been set up at Waterford Garda Station under a senior investigating officer, and Family Liaison Officers have been appointed to support the victims' family.
Exactly how far the investigation has gone is a matter on which early reporting differs — and readers should treat the strongest claims as reported, not confirmed. In its own public statement, An Garda Síochána said only that it is “investigating all the circumstances” of the fire and described the incident as “ongoing” and “evolving”, declining to give further detail for now.
RTÉ's crime correspondent Paul Reynolds reported that gardaí have opened a criminal investigation into the blaze, with arson being pursued as a primary line of inquiry. The Sun quoted a Garda spokesperson as saying a murder investigation into an arson attack had been commenced. No suspect has been named or charged.
Gardaí are appealing for information from anyone who was in the vicinity of Birch Avenue, Birchwood, Waterford city in the early hours of Tuesday to contact Waterford Garda Station on 051 305300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
Reaction: 'deeply disturbing' and 'utter devastation'
Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the blaze as a “deeply disturbing situation” when he spoke to RTÉ News on Tuesday morning.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with anybody who has lost their lives and all who are affected,” he said. “We thank the first responders who are at the scene. We say to everyone to give space to the Gardaí, to deal with what is a deeply worrying and devastating situation.”

“My deepest sympathies go to the loved ones of those who have lost their lives, their friends, neighbours and the wider community,” he said.
Sinn Féin TD for Waterford David Cullinane, who knows the family, told RTÉ he was “utterly heartbroken” by the tragedy. Local reports described the family who lived in the house as well-known residents in the area.
Where the fire happened
Birchwood is a housing estate off the Killure Road in Waterford city, in the south-east of Ireland. Part of the estate remained cordoned off on Tuesday morning as gardaí and fire investigators examined the scene, and staff from Gas Networks Ireland also attended, RTÉ reported.
The deaths of two children have deepened the shock in a city where neighbours, schools and local clubs are closely connected.
What happens next
Investigators will now carry out a technical examination of the scene, post-mortem examinations, and witness interviews. The Garda appeal for anyone who was near Birch Avenue in the early hours of Tuesday is a central part of the inquiry: even a small detail could matter.
Gardaí have said they are not in a position to provide further detail while the investigation is at an early stage. Updates are expected as the inquiry develops, including formal identification of the victims and any further statement on the cause of the fire.
This is a developing story; this article will be updated as confirmed information becomes available.
